Janice Murray is a Kuninjku artist based in Maningrida, Central Arnhem Land. Her practice is grounded in the cultural knowledge, stories and natural environment of her Country, with her paintings often depicting important plants, animals and ancestral subjects. Murray is particularly recognised for her depictions of Jurriyi (Whistling Ducks), a recurring subject within her work. The birds are familiar inhabitants of the wetlands and waterways of Arnhem Land, where large groups gather around billabongs and floodplains. Through repeated, rhythmic arrangements of the ducks, Murray creates compositions that speak both to the abundance of life on Country and to the close observation of the natural world that underpins her practice. Working through Maningrida Arts & Culture, Murray is part of one of Australia's most significant and enduring centres of contemporary Aboriginal artistic practice.
