Rex Dupain was introduced to photography at a young age by his father Max Dupain, but it was his studies in painting at The National Art School that initially shaped his artistic career. Later, from 1987 to 1997, he taught painting and drawing at the school. Rex went on to complete a Master of Fine Arts (Painting) at The University of NSW and enjoyed a successful career as a painter. In the mid-1990s, Rex rediscovered his passion for photography, which has since become a central focus of his practice. Rex Dupain has held numerous solo exhibitions, both domestically and internationally, at esteemed galleries and institutions including: The Australian Embassy in Paris, The National Trust Centre (SH Ervin Gallery), The Museum of Sydney, and Michael Reid Berlin. Rex has also had multiple photography books published including: The Colour of Bondi (New Holland Publishers), Australia: 100 Photographs (Penguin Publishing), and Bondi to Broken Hill (Harper Collins Publishers). His work is held in prestigious collections, including the National Portrait Gallery and the National Library of Australia.
