'Tower of London' is in dialogue with the history of Indigenous encounters with British power and colonisation. Tiwi patterning and mark-making in ochres of the Tiwi, are overlaid on the stone, iron and shadow of the Tower, re-imaging this icon. It invites us to consider monuments not as fixed histories but as contested spaces where history, memory and interpretation meet. The first Indigenous man to visit the Tower was Bennelong, cultural attaché with Governor Phillip of NSW in 1792. 200 years later Bush found himself in the same cityscape for his solo exhibition at Frieze No 9 Cork St, London - a landscape made more resonant by the knowledge his great-great grandfather came from Scotland. Bush’s paintings meld Tiwi visual language predating the Renaissance with Western imagery to create a visual reckoning with ancestry, empire and identity. In doing so he unravels the dark underbelly of history.
