Lynette Bell

My creative journey didn’t begin with a paintbrush or in an art studio. It began much earlier, through my work as a hairdresser and later as the owner of my own florist business. Both professions taught me to appreciate form, balance, colour, texture and, above all, the importance of detail. In many ways, hairdressing and floral design are creative arts in their own right, and they gave me a lasting love of beauty and the satisfaction of creating something by hand. Born in Christchurch, New Zealand, in 1953, I became a permanent resident of Western Australia in 2006. My more personal artistic journey developed gradually over the years. After moving to Australia, I continued to explore my creativity alongside my professional life and eventually found myself increasingly drawn towards sculpture and the possibilities of working with reclaimed and recycled materials. In 2016, I discovered a particular fascination with recycling paper. Junk mail, advertising circulars and other everyday household materials became my medium. I enjoy discovering how paper can be manipulated and transformed into a strong, solid structure, while allowing its own character to develop and become part of the finished work. My inspiration often comes from what is around me—something left on the verge, discarded in a building-site bin, or an everyday object that others may simply overlook. My approach is largely intuitive. I don’t always begin with a fully formed idea; often, I let my imagination take flight and allow an unexpected character to emerge, usually with a touch of humour and whimsy. Today, creating art is an important part of my life. I don’t see myself as a full-time artist, but rather as someone who has found a rewarding creative path that continues to evolve. One of the greatest pleasures is knowing that my sculptures bring joy to people and make them smile. It is especially meaningful to know that my work has found homes with private collectors in Perth, New Zealand, Canada and further afield, including with extended family overseas. My work celebrates creativity, recycling and imagination, and the endless possibilities found in materials we often overlook.

Hilly Coufreur is an abstract artist who loves working with palette knives and oil paints. Hilly creates bold, vibrant pieces that draw inspiration from the natural world around her. Her practice is rooted in experimentation — with texture, colour, and line — usually on small size substrates. Originally from the Netherlands, Hilly trained as a primary school teacher before moving to New Zealand with her husband, artist Jos Coufreur. Together they raised four children, and it wasn’t until they had all left home that Hilly began painting. Encouraged by Jos, she discovered a love for abstract art and quickly found her own creative voice. Eventually, with all four of their children settling in Perth, Hilly and her husband made the decision to move to Western Australia. They now live and work in the scenic hills near Donnybrook, WA.

Jos’s dynamic style is evident in his expressive paintings of people, animals, urban scenes, and landscapes. Working on a large scale allows him the freedom to move with energy and emotion, bringing his subjects to life with vivid colours and movement. In addition to his personal works, Jos also creates custom commissions. Growing up in the Wollongong area of Australia, Jos moved to the Netherlands with his family at age 17. After marrying, he and his wife relocated to New Zealand in pursuit of a better lifestyle. Eventually, with all four of their children settling in Perth, Jos and his wife made the decision to move to Western Australia. They now live and work in the scenic hills near Donnybrook, WA.

Nicole Edmonds

As a young person, I was a talented painter, but I became a tradie and painted my way around the world. I channelled most of my creativity into beautifying homes while pursuing photography as a hobby. Some of my photographs appeared in local newspapers and other media. RSLWA's Army Art Watercolour Painting Course inspired me to pick up my artist’s brushes again, rekindling a talent that had never left me. Creating art is deeply enjoyable.

Peter Gerring

My late father inspired my love of timber. With his guidance I built my first timber yacht and spent many years sailing on Melville Waters. Later, after creating furniture from recycled timber, it was a natural progression into woodturning utilizing timber from felled trees that others see no purpose in. And now, I find inspiration for my resin work in the character of wood grain and its natural distortions.
